Empowering Tomorrow's Statisticians: Key Takeaways from the 2024 PSI Careers Event

This year the PSI Medical Statistics Careers Event was held at Yeomanry House in Bloomsbury, London. This annual event is designed to give attendees an inside look at the variety of careers available in the field, along with practical advice for getting started.

A mixture of 88 BSc, MSc and PhD students registered for the Careers Event from 22 universities.

The day began with a welcome introduction outlining PSI’s role in supporting students and early-career statisticians. A presentation was given by Angus Jennings, a new starter at the MRC Clinical Trials Unit at UCL.

The panel discussion that followed featured professionals from across the industry. Angus was joined by Paul Terill (independent consultant), Fiona Grimson (UCB), Violeta Balinskaite (Medpace), and Elliot Thomas (AstraZeneca and MSc apprentice at the University of Strathclyde). Each panellist shared their career journey, daily responsibilities, and advice for students.

Following this there was an exhibitor session where, students were able to ask questions and learn more about careers in medical statistics. Twenty exhibitors attended the event, including 9 pharmaceutical companies, 3 Contract Research Organisations (CROs), 2 Clinical Trials Units (CTUs), 5 universities, and 1 professional society.

Students came away saying:

“This event helps so much, and everyone’s been helpful clarifying what I can actually do with my degree”

(Abigail Pearce, Undergraduate  Mathematics and Statistics Student, University of  Oxford)

“[Statistics in healthcare] It's a great thing to do and something to be proud of as well as a really interesting topic.” (Jakob Holton, Masters Student in Medical Statistics, University of Leicester)

Michael Lawton, a Masters program director at the University of Bristol, was attending the event as an exhibitor for the third time and said:

“In previous years, some of the students that I've met have actually come and joined our course, which is why I keep on coming back here. In fact, there's a few students here today who are thinking about what they're going to do after their MSc, that I met at this event last year, who are currently doing my course.”

We would like to thank all the exhibitors for all the time and effort they put into the event to help the students get started creating an amazing career in medical statistics that they can be proud of. Thank you for making the day such a success. A special thanks also goes to Medpace for sponsoring this year’s event.

The next event will be hosted by AstraZeneca at The Discovery Centre in Cambridge on 19th November 2025. Get the date in your diary!
