Big Bang 2011
The Big Bang is described as the UK's biggest celebration of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects, aiming to inspire young people towards study and future careers in these areas. This year's event was held on 9th - 12th March in the ExCeL centre in London's Docklands, and PSI were there with our Clinical Trial Simulation Game. The aim of the activity was to encourage young people to think about experimental design and probability by choosing a number of parameters for a phase II study. A simulation was then run to see whether the study had made the correct go/no-go decision, and a large screen showed who had helped the most patients that day and generated the most income. The activity generated a lot of interest from children from of a wide range of age groups, and PSI volunteers were kept very busy fielding questions from the pupils and their teachers and parents.
Overall the event was a great success in raising the awareness of our profession, and the volunteers who took part certainly felt it was an excellent opportunity to inspire large numbers of young people to consider a career in statistics, as well as having a lot of fun. We hope to see you at next year’s event in Birmingham!.

Postgraduate Statistics Pharmaceutical Careers Education Day
PSI CALC held their first postgraduate careers event on 26th January 2011, which was a great success! 10 companies (Amgen, AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, GSK, PAREXEL, Phastar, Pfizer, PPD, Quanticate and Roche), 2 organisations (PSI and PhUSE) and approximately 60 students from 8 universities (Kent, Lancaster, Leicester, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Reading, Sheffield, Southampton and UCL) attended.
Throughout the day the students had many opportunities to visit company stands and talk with people working in the industry to get further information and freebies! The afternoon also consisted of a series of themed presentations from company representatives about the industry. The students were given a flavour of:
- PSI – Who we are
- What is the Pharmaceutical Industry and the Phases of Drug Development
- Statisticians/programmers - how and where they are involved, as well as the similarities and differences in roles/qualification
- Different options in the Pharmaceutical Industry: Pharmaceutical company vs. CRO
- A new starter presentation
- Current trends and changes in the pharmaceutical industry
Towards the end of the afternoon there was the opportunity to get involved in an interactive group workshop to design an oncology trial. This included thinking about the objectives, endpoints, design, population, data collection, presentation and analysis for a potential new cancer drug.
PSI CALC would like to thank all our presenters Colin Neate (chair of PSI CALC), Fi Guillard (GSK), Sarah Bray (Amgen), Amanda Darekar (Pfizer), Michael Cartwright (PAREXEL), Katherine Hutchinson (Quanticate), Jennifer Green (Roche) and Claire Brittain (Eli Lilly). Further thanks go to the AstraZeneca workshop team; Emma Duffield, Martin Jenkins and Maria Taboada.
Company feedback was positive saying that it was definitely worthwhile attending and it was good to meet people who were genuinely interested and enthusiastic about the industry. Students from the universities were also in agreement, they thought the day was very useful for networking and also that the presentations/workshop were interesting and informative.
Since this pilot went so well, PSI CALC plans to organise similar events in future years. The location and timing of the next event is currently under discussion, so look out for more details later in the year!
