about us

PSI's purpose is to promote and lead statistical thinking to in the Pharmaceutical Industry.

PSI is a non-profit organisation formed in 1977 which provides a forum for regular discussion of statistics and issues relating to the practice of statistics in the pharmaceutical industry, as well as promoting Good Statistical Practice within the industry. Together with other European statistical organisations, PSI is a member of the European Federation of Statisticians in the Pharmaceutical Industry (EFSPI). In this capacity, PSI monitors and responds to appropriate regulatory statistical issues within the pharmaceutical industry.

There are approximately 1200 members and five honorary life-members of PSI. Members of PSI are statisticians and statistical programmers working in all areas of the drug development process, including research, pre-clinical, clinical, production, quality control, marketing and market research; as well as academic statisticians, consultants and others interested in the application of statistics within the industry. The majority of members (around 80%) are based in the UK.

The activities of PSI are largely planned, organised and implemented by various subgroups, under the direction of the Board of Directors.

PSI has a 3 year business plan which can be viewed here.

The roles of each of the comittees are outlined in further pages on this site (which can be reached via the navigation bar on the left side of the page). In summary, benefits of PSI membership include:

  • A three-day Annual Conference, which provides a forum for the discussion of the application of statistics, new developments and other topics impacting on the work of statisticians and statistical programmers in the industry.
  • A number of one-day scientific meetings each year (perhaps as joint meetings with other professional bodies). The topics of these meetings include statistical techniques, applications in pre-clinical and clinical trials, therapeutic areas, as well as regulatory and management issues.
  • A variety of training courses, including the notable "Introduction to Industry" training course, for statisticians new to the industry. This course aims to broaden the participants' knowledge and appreciation of the drug development process from discovery through to marketing.
  • A quarterly newsletter (SPIN).
  • Access to the members-only area of this web site, including online discussion forums, event booking, a Resource Centre and the membership database.
